“Listen to the Whispers”: Recognizing the Subtle Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in Canada, a time to share knowledge that empowers women to be proactive stewards of their health. Ovarian cancer is often called “the disease that whispers” because its early symptoms can be subtle, vague, and easily mistaken for common digestive or menstrual issues. Too often, these whispers are ignored or dismissed until the disease has progressed.

As a Naturopathic Doctor, I believe one of my most important roles is to help you learn to listen to and trust your body’s signals. This post is not meant to cause alarm, but to amplify those whispers. My goal is to provide you with the clear, essential information you need to recognize potential warning signs, track your symptoms, and confidently advocate for yourself with your medical doctor.

The Challenge of Early Detection

The key challenge with ovarian cancer is that there is no single, reliable screening test for the general population. This makes awareness of the symptoms our most powerful tool for early detection. When found and treated early, the outcomes for ovarian cancer are significantly better. This is why it is so crucial that we learn to recognize the signs.

Listen to Your Body: The Key Symptoms to Track

Reputable organizations like Ovarian Cancer Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society have worked to raise awareness of the most common symptoms. The key characteristics to remember are that these symptoms are new (not something you’ve always had), frequent (occurring more than 12 times a month), and persistent [1].

The main symptoms to watch for can be remembered with the acronym BEAT:

B – Bloating that is persistent.

This is not the kind of bloating that comes and goes with a meal or your cycle. It’s a lasting, uncomfortable swelling or a feeling of increased abdominal size that doesn’t resolve.

E – Eating difficulty.

This often presents as feeling full very quickly, even after eating only a small amount, or a general loss of appetite.

A – Abdominal or pelvic pain.

This is pain or discomfort in your lower stomach or pelvis that you feel on most days.

T – Trouble with your bladder.

This can include needing to urinate more frequently or feeling a sudden, urgent need to go.

Other potential symptoms can include changes in bowel habits (new constipation or diarrhea), unexplained fatigue, or unexpected weight loss.

The Power of Symptom Tracking & Self-Advocacy

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above and they are new and persistent, the most empowering step you can take is to start tracking them.

Keep a simple journal:

Note the symptom, when it started, how often it occurs, and its severity. For example: “Persistent bloating for the last 3 weeks, feeling very full after small meals, and needing to urinate more often.”

Be your own best advocate:

You are the expert on your body. When you speak to your medical doctor, be clear, confident, and specific. Use your symptom journal. Phrases like, “This is new for me, and it’s been happening almost every day for the past month,” are very powerful. If you feel your concerns are not being taken seriously, it is always okay to seek a second opinion.

The Role of Your Naturopathic Doctor

It is critical to understand that a Naturopathic Doctor does not diagnose or treat cancer. Your medical doctor and oncologist are the primary team for diagnosis and conventional treatment.

My role as an ND is to be a supportive partner on your overall health team. I am here to take a comprehensive health history, to listen carefully to all your symptoms (even the vague ones), and to help you identify patterns. I can help you understand when a collection of symptoms warrants further medical investigation and support you in navigating the healthcare system. My focus is always on supporting your foundational health, empowering you with knowledge, and ensuring you feel heard.

Amplifying the Whispers

Awareness is our greatest ally. By learning to recognize these subtle but significant symptoms, we can transform a whisper into a clear call to action. Listening to your body and advocating for your health are the most powerful, proactive steps you can take. Please share this information with the women in your life.

If you are experiencing persistent, concerning symptoms and are looking for a healthcare partner who will listen, take a comprehensive look at your overall health, and support you in advocating for your well-being, I invite you to book a consultation.
